How to manage stress before it manages you

Running late, a health issue or juggling too many demands - stress is a part of our lives whether we like it or not.

Stress is a normal physiological response to challenging or new situations. Often a short-term experience, stress can be helpful in some situations like a sports game. However, it’s important to note too much stress can take a toll on our well-being.

“When stress is prolonged, it can exceed our ability to cope, contributing to physical or mental health issues,” says Dr Nathan Castle, Clinical Psychologist.

What is stress?

Stress could be summed up as a feeling of pressure or tension. Also called the ‘fight or flight’ response, stress is a helpful way your body has adapted to respond to danger. When stressed, your body releases hormones that increase your heart rate and blood pressure.

Typically once the stressor is removed or gone, your body will return to its normal state. However, if you are under constant stress, your body never returns to normal.

How to manage your stress

Stress is a normal and necessary part of life, but it can have serious consequences if left unchecked.

A study by the Australian Psychological Society showed that 35% of Australians report having significant distress in their lives due to stress. This means many of you aren’t alone in dealing with stress.

So whether your stress is internal or external, you need to address the stressors in your life and manage your stress level effectively.

Ways to manage stress

Relaxation techniques, exercise, eating a balanced diet, CBT and speaking with a friend or family member may help, or you may feel you need help from a professional. Speaking with a Geelong Psychologist can help identify your stressors and develop stress management strategies.
